Ron Abraira has worked in the field of economic development and entrepreneurship for the last twenty three years. After serving in the United States Navy, he attended the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo where he achieved a BS in Business Administration in 1986. Subsequently, he worked as a Business Services Officer with the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake primarily writing business plans for local entrepreneurs and performing research duties for community development projects. As the Canadian Aboriginal Economic Development Strategy (CAEDS) evolved he was named the Executive Director for the Kahnawake Economic Development Group in June 1990. As the Director he guided the development of both the Aboriginal Capital Corporation and the Employment and Training agencies in Kahnawake.
During this time he also attended Concordia University and achieved his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1995. His MBA research paper was a cross cultural study comparing Mohawk entrepreneurs to non-Mohawk entrepreneurs. Upon completion of his MBA he undertook a three year mandate with the First Nations Human Resources Development Commission of Quebec (FNHRDCQ) as Finance and Operations consultant, where he assisted in the implementation of the Regional Bilateral Agreement (more recently referred to as “AHRDAs”) between Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL) and Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). During this mandate he developed financial accountability mechanisms, operations procedures, and client activity reporting mechanisms, and assisted in administrative capacity building to the Local First Nations Commissions throughout the province of Quebec.
Ron now works as a management consultant; his mandates are mainly in the field of economic development, entrepreneurship, and institutional development. He sits on the Investment Committee of the First Nations Venture Capital Fund of Quebec. Since 2002, he has taught entrepreneurship at the John Molson School of Business (Concordia University).
